  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary license in the specific subject area(s): Moderate Disabilities 5-12
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university; master's degree preferred.

  • Sound knowledge of high school curriculum in core subjects and common core standards.
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations related to special education

JOB DETAILS The mission of Fresh Start Prep is to assist young adults, ages 18-22 years old, with disabilities transition from school to adulthood with the highest level of independence possible. This will be achieved through classroom instruction, community-based instruction, meaningful work, and community involvement. The transition-aged student's primary instructional delivery person is the fresh start prep educator. Student achievement and individual growth primarily depend on the classroom teacher's work and efforts. The position is demanding, varied, and complex. The teacher must be a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be well-trained in content knowledge and teaching strategies. The educator works extensively to develop scaffolded lessons and community experiences to meet students’ IEP goals and objectives. The teacher should know current trends, research, and best practices for working with transition-aged students. SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction for students with mild autism, intellectual impairments, and closely related disabilities
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Coordinate activities to increase students’ self-determination that are results-oriented processes focused on improving academic and functional achievement
  • Maintain transition binders for students in the program to track students’ post-secondary goals, community participation, self-advocacy, records, and independent living
  • Write and implement IEP documents, including goals and objectives for students in the program
  • Collaborate with non-profits and community-based organizations to seek volunteer and career opportunities for students and maintain current relationships
  • Prepare students for opportunities with appropriate adult services providers
  • Assist students to be successful with a college-level class that students take while in the program
  • Communicate with families, staff, and other stakeholders about students’ progress while attending the program
  • Plan and supervise community outings to maximize student exposure to real-life experiences
  • Meets and instructs assigned students in the locations and at the time designated
  • Performance of other job-related duties as assigned by the administrator of special education, deputy administrator of special education, assistant director of special education, or program specialist TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
